  • Father Ryan Recap

Our team completed the 2021 season with a tough loss to Father Ryan. Ryan played very well. Our team fought very hard as they have done the entire season but we were never able to make the key play when we needed it most. As in all of our games our team gave great physical effort for the entire game. Very proud of them for that.

    MERCURY AWARDS:
The Owls were led on Defense by linebacker McRae Dickinson who finished the game with 8 tackles, 2 of which were TFL's. It was another consistent effort by McRae. On offense we were led by some very tough running by Hunter Barnes. Hunter rushed 27 times for a tough 102 yards against a solid Father Ryan defense.

While our 2021 journey ended sooner than we wished this team competed well and brought honor to the Red & Blue.
  • Brentwood Academy Recap

Our team continued to show great character on Friday night with an excellent comeback attempt against Brentwood Academy. After an early turnover the defense held the Eagles to a FG. Later in the 1st quarter our team put together an excellent 84 yard drive in 14 plays to take a 7-3 lead. But BA came right back with 2 TD's in the 2nd quarter to go in at half up 17-7. The 3rd quarter was a struggle but the defense made a solid goalline stand limiting the Eagles to a FG but then the Owls misfired on a punting situation and gave up another TD to go down 27 to 7. Our boys were not going to give up and the offense started clicking and produced another long drive going 80 yards in 15 plays. The defense got a 3 and out and the Owls went more quickly this time with a 79 yard drive in 6 plays. Now we only trailed by 6 with 9:41 to go. Brentwood came back with a great drive converting to 3rd and long plays and kicked their 3rd field goal of the night. The Owls kept firing and got a TD late to make it 30 to 28 but could not come up with the onside kick. It was a tough loss but once again our team fought to the finish.

    MERCURY AWARDS
Our Buzzard Player of the Week is Clayton Kuhlo. Clayton has worked all season as the scout team center. Tough job when every play starts with you but he has done an excellent job both on this group and as the JV center this season.
Players of the game are Hudson Shoaf (7 tackles, 4 TFL's, 1 sack, 27 DPV points) and Mac Owen (7 catches for 160 yards). Congrats.

The team now moves into the post-season and will host Father Ryan next Friday at Stokes Stadium. Game time is 6pm. This team has played some excellent football this season and has the tools to make a run. They have proven that they will compete the entire game. GO OWLS!!
  • PURE ALLIANCE Wrap Up

It was a beautiful night for football at Stokes Stadium. Also a great night to celebrate the tremendous contributions of our 2021 Seniors. After a great victory last week over our rivals from Walnut Grove the Owls would be challenged to keep up the intensity against a very talented team from PURE. Glad to report we were up to the task. The defense played an excellent game not only preventing PURE from moving the ball but also giving the offense great field position. On offense we had a couple of snafus but all in all continued to execute at a good level. Special teams continued to contribute with a blocked punt and excellent kick-off coverage. The evening ended with a happy group of seniors gathered on the field with their families for pictures.

    MERCURY AWARDS:
Buzzard Award: This week we recognize Griffin Allen for his work on the defensive scout team. He was nominated by Coach Schuetz.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME: George Hamsley and Porter Webber earned the honors this week. George continued his fine play at QB making several excellent reads. Porter had 2 tackles for loss and forced a fumble that was recovered setting up a TD.

Next week we conclude the regular season as we host Brentwood Academy. BA moved over this year to join our region. Both teams will be battling to secure at least a 3rd place seed in the play-offs with each hoping for a possible #2 seed if Briarcrest defeats Ensworth. Both the Owls and the Eagles have had similar seasons with some early bumps but both have been playing much better the last couple of weeks. Should be an excellent game.
