Technology Award Named for Mr. Simi
The Tennessee Educational Technology Association (TETA) has named its prestigious Teacher of the Year Award the John Simi Teacher of the Year Award in recognition of his “unparalleled contributions to education and technology integration across Tennessee.”
Mr. Simi has served as MUS director of technology since 2017 and from 2015-17 as coordinator of educational technology. Among his many accomplishments, he played a key role in helping the school navigate the COVID pandemic so classes could continue digitally during the quarantine.
“John was invaluable to the school before the pandemic, but I can honestly say I don’t know how we would have gotten through this past year without his expertise, efficiency, and can-do attitude,” Headmaster Pete Sanders said in May 2021.
In announcing the award, TETA Executive Director Jill Pierce said, “John Simi’s long-standing dedication to TETA and his unwavering passion for supporting educators have left an indelible mark on our organization and the broader educational community. His tireless efforts to mentor teachers, advocate for innovative practices, and champion the transformative power of technology in the classroom have not only elevated TETA’s mission but have also inspired countless educators to strive for excellence.
“This renaming is a testament to the profound respect and admiration that John has earned from his peers and from TETA as a whole. By naming this award in his honor, we ensure that his legacy of leadership, innovation, and service continues to inspire future generations of educators.”
Simi, who was in on the ground floor when the association was created in the early ’90s, said he was surprised when he received the honor at the TETA meeting. “They even managed to sneak my sister [Theresa Simi] into Chattanooga so she could be there to see it all unfold. I am humbled and honored by the recognition.”
