Aviation Provides Career Paths

Captain Albert Glenn, former chairman of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Board of Directors and managing director of Global Flight Operations for FedEx Express, spoke in chapel October 18.
He urged Owls to consider a career in aviation and answered questions about the state of the industry.

Glenn, who retired after 44 years as a FedEx pilot, served in numerous positions with the company while logging 18,000 flight hours. He described starting out as a multi-engine flight instructor and working in aircraft sales.

Glenn’s variety of experiences led him to specialize in youth education, which started during his time with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals. “It gave me the opportunity to take some of those talents I had learned and start building programs to help students like you get exposure to the aviation industry, exposure to different career fields and how to blend those things together in a way that worked for you.”

Now, he works with the Luke Weathers Flight Academy, Memphis ACE Academy, Aerospace Professional in School, and the Shelby County School’s East T-Stem Academy. These programs can lead to opportunities in the aviation and aerospace industries.

“The goal [of Luke Weathers Flight Academy] is being able to expose students who had an interest in aviation being able to fly aircraft at a reasonable cost and being exposed to career opportunities.”
