TEDxMemphis Comes to Chapel
Students experienced a sample of TEDxMemphis: the miXtape in chapel today, hearing two talks that will be presented in Hyde Chapel Saturday, September 28.
Slingshot Memphis Director of Insights and Impact John Dunavant presented “Let’s Build Cathedrals,” a talk about applying a generational mindset to tackling societal problems. “I want you to ask yourself ‘What is it going to take for me to be a great ancestor to a successful person I will never meet?’ I want you to find your passion, to understand your unique skills and strengths, and I want you to go build cathedrals,” he said, drawing a parallel between the decades it took to build grand cathedrals and the years upon years it takes to solve difficult problems.
Dr. SunAh Laybourn, assistant professor of Sociology at University of Memphis, presented “Where You Belong,” a talk about adoption, family, and knowing who you are. “Belonging isn’t found at all,” she said. “It’s created. It’s created in a curiosity to know and to be known by one another. And to be known for exactly and all of who you are. Isn’t that something we all share?... I hope instead of trying to find the answer out there, I hope you remember that it’s waiting to be created from within.”
This year's TEDx Talks are brimming with ideas that will feed your curiosity, challenge your perceptions, and offer a one-of-a-kind, live-event experience. For information and tickets, visit
