Sherman Accepts Volunteer Award

The Alumni Executive Board honored Scott Sherman ’89 as Volunteer of the Year at their Awards Luncheon September 19. During his recently completed two-year term as president of the D. Eugene Thorn Society, Sherman led the Executive Committee to record-setting years for both members and dollars.
Under his leadership, the Thorn Society rose from 469 to 511 members and total dollars raised went from $624,535 to $664,857. Thorn donations accounted for 38% of all Annual Fund dollars raised in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Sherman is still serving on the Thorn Committee this year to support his classmate, Pat Hopper ’89, who has taken over as president.

Sherman has a long history of volunteerism for his alma mater, beginning in 2007 when he signed on as the sole class representative for the Class of 1989. He has since provided timely class updates, a strong phonathon contingent of callers, and unmatched camaraderie for his classmates – including hosting the 35th reunion party for them September 21.

Over the years, he has served as an Alumni Executive Board member, a College Counseling mock interview facilitator, and a participant in alumni focus groups.

Classmate Jason Fair ’89 described his friend’s giving nature: “Scott is one of those people who definitely has a softer, kinder side, and he thinks of others more than most people do. He’s been known through the years as one of those guys who would take the time to write a note or make a phone call to check on a friend or commemorate a special occasion.”

In accepting the award, Sherman spoke about why he gives his time to support the school. “First of all, I love MUS,” he said. “MUS prepares you for life better than any school I can imagine. The quality and direction that students get here put them on a different path.”

Noting the strong sense of service instilled in Owls, he mentioned statistics from the Community Impact Report supporting his assertion, including that alumni hold 572 seats on nonprofit boards in the Mid-South.

Describing how relationships with classmates, teachers, and coaches have enriched the years since graduation, he said, “That’s something special.”

His strongest endorsement of the school is that Scott and his wife, Deede, enrolled their triplet sons – sophomores Cannon, Tanner, and Walter – at MUS.
