Math Modeling Team Advances

The math modeling team of seniors Evan Wu (captain), Bryan Ding, Eshaan Patnaik, Jerry Xiao, and junior Alan Cheng have advanced in two competitions, including as finalists in The Actuarial Foundation’s Modeling the Future contest. Their project, “Brighten the Future: Restoring Power to the United States” was among only 15 nationwide selected to advance to the finals.
Wu accepted the finalist designation in a Zoom meeting March 20. After thanking contest organizers and “our ever-supportive coach, Dr. Steve Gadbois,” Wu described their project. 
 
“Our model analyzed some of the most intractable causes of power outages for multiple states in the U.S. We believe that our project’s importance lies in its modern-day relevance since the national strain on power supply continues to increase with the rapid development of technology, including AI and electric vehicles.”
 
The same team advanced to the second level of competition in the 14-hour MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge) 2024. They were in the top 128 out of 655 teams, and their paper was commended in the category of technical computing. 
 
“The M3 topic, ‘Home of the Brave: Housing the United States,’ was unknown to the students until they began their brutal 14-hour quest on March 1,” Gadbois said. “In contrast, the Modeling the Future topic was chosen by our team, and they worked on it over several months.”
