Last night at Hull-Dobbs Field the MUS 8th Grade Footballers picked up a 20-0 win against the visiting Bartlett Panthers in their first regular season conference game. Bartlett brought a very large and physical team to the game, but a well prepared MUS defense matched them and played outstanding all night long as they almost completely stopped both the run and pass games of Bartlett. Lead tacklers included James Hanlon at DE and Haynes Kiser at LB/DT while Palmer Albertine stood out at DB shutting down Bartlett’s most important offensive player. The Owl Offense kicked off the night with a first quarter deep pass from QB Price Renovich to WR Thomas Higginbotham who made an extraordinary catch on a jump ball and then finished it off with a 15 yard run into the endzone. The Owl Offensive line played well all night and was led by a strong performance by new MUS student-athlete Tanner “Tiny” Mills playing tackle and lead blocking for RB Tommie Reed who picked up a touchdown on the ground and one via a nice flare pass from QB Price Renovich.
Coach Wade was thrilled with the effort and said, “I know we have a lot to work on and we will need to immediately get ready for Briarcrest next week, but I am very proud of the strong team effort tonight, especially this early in the season. It showed that the last two months of conditioning and practicing hard really paid off as we earned a W. Good luck to the Varsity against McCallie—Go Owls!”. Next Thursday the 8th Grade Team plays at the Briarcrest Saints on Thurs.
