Harkins Shares Alcy Ball Mission

Alcy Ball Development Corporation Executive Director Seth Harkins spoke in chapel about his work in the Alcy Ball neighborhood of South Memphis. ABDC’s mission is to “develop a thriving, resident-led community reflecting the Kingdom of God, through the following programs: Connect, Train, Restore.”
The organization builds relationships with neighborhood residents, offers financial literacy and homeownership training courses, and completes restoration projects, such as home rehabilitation and construction, home repair, and blight remediation efforts.

Through the Memphis Teacher Residency, founded by David Montague ’82 to train teachers for work in disadvantaged neighborhoods, Harkins taught students in Whitehaven, Oakhaven, and Orange Mound. A resident of Alcy Ball, he has worked with ABDC since June 2016 and has served as executive director since July 2019.

Harkins described the importance of tension in life – including in service to others – to spark growth. A project with Alcy Ball is one way students can lend a hand during service week September 7-15. Read more about the opportunities HERE.
