Math Modeling Team Advances

The Actuarial Foundation announced the semifinalists in the 2024-25 Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC), including the MUS team. Alan Cheng ’25 (captain), Joephen Chen ’25, Rushil Komeravelli '25, Michael Liu ’25, and Albert Ding ’26 have qualified to progress to the next round of the challenge.
Cheng describes the process to date: “The qualification round included completing two parts: analyzing data given to us by MTFC in a ‘scenario quest’ and making recommendations based on that (a watered-down version of the project going forward), and a proposal that included explaining our intended research and finding possible datasets we might use. The scenario quest involved insurance companies and diabetes medication, and our intended project will be on fentanyl overdoses in California.”

According to sponsor Dr. Steve Gadbois, “Our guys are strong enough that they only need me to act [on paper] as coach, provide a room, and provide occasional snacks.”

251 teams from across the country entered the challenge, and 128 advanced to semifinalist status. The process proceeds through second semester and includes a series of deadlines for project components. The finalist event for the Southeast Region is March 18, and final videos and reports are due April 6. Awards are announced on May 2. Learn more at mtfchallenge.org.
