Chamberlain honored by U of M

Congratulations to MUS Tennis Coach and Director of the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center Phil Chamberlain who was honored with the Billy J. Murphy Award at the University of Memphis M Club banquet Saturday. The award is presented to a former student-athlete who excelled in his/her profession since leaving the University of Memphis.
Since arriving at MUS in 2008, Chamberlain has helped elevate the Owls’ game. He became MUS tennis head coach in 2021, replacing Bill Taylor after his retirement, and he has maintained the program’s status as one of the best in Tennessee. The Owls won region titles in his first four seasons with two state runner-up finishes (2022, 2023) and two appearances in the state semifinals (2021, 2024). In addition, Chamberlain coached Roberto Ferrer-Guimaraes ’23 to the singles state championship in 2023. He also served as the head coach at Hutchison School since 2008, leading his players to a state championship in 2009.

Before taking over as MUS head coach, Chamberlain was assistant coach from 2008-2020, helping guide the Owls to three state titles, and he has served as director of the school’s Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center since 2008. He was tennis director of the Racquet Club of Memphis for 30 years, coaching three players to the No. 1 ranking in the nation and 152 players to Division I scholarships. From 1999-2005, he was head coach of the University of Memphis men’s tennis team. Chamberlain has been inducted into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame, Memphis Open Hall of Fame, Memphis City Amateur Hall of Fame, and the University of Memphis M Club Hall of Fame.
