Smith Raises Awareness for Conservation

Chuck Smith ’66, chairman of the board of Ducks Unlimited, returned to the Hyde Chapel stage for the first time since his graduation to teach Owls about Ducks Unlimited and their conservation efforts throughout the country.
Smith touched on the history of the organization and how it came to call Memphis home. He’s served many roles at DU including the first vice president and an officer of the board of directors. He played a pivotal role, alongside the late Billy Dunavant, former MUS Trustee, in recruiting the company to Memphis in 1994.
“One of the objectives of my tenure as being chairman is to increase the awareness of what Ducks Unlimited does and is all about here in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s a wonderful company for our city.”

He went on to play a video detailing the charitable endeavors of the company including how they have provided conservation efforts on tens of millions of acres since 1937. They aim to preserve wetlands for “waterfowl, wildlife, and people.”

Smith says the Owls have a lot to be very proud of when it comes to the Ducks Unlimited Chapter at MUS. The group has been wildly successful since their inception in 2015, leading Smith to call them one of the greatest of all time.

“You want to talk about the GOAT high school chapters of Ducks Unlimited who have raised the most money, it has to be right here in this room, the MUS chapter,” Smith said. “An astonishing five years in a row, the best chapter in the whole country…. That qualifies as a dynasty in Ducks Unlimited terms.”

Smith ended his speech by urging Owls to apply for the Ducks Unlimited college scholarship offered to high school seniors. “It’s a great scholarship. Applications are open right now.”
