McKay Urges ‘Do the Work’

Pam and George Sousoulas Chair of Economics and Assistant Track and Field Coach Orlando McKay served as backup quarterback for chapel today when the scheduled speaker could not make it.
He chose the topic “Do the work” and illustrated his talk with examples from his own journey in sports, from a mediocre – but fast – high school football player to a highly ranked wide receiver recruited by the University of Washington, to a fifth-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers. At each stage, he said, he put in the work to get the desired result. Even when things didn’t seem to pan out – as when he was cut from the Packers because of injuries – the work was not in vain.
 
“That taught me about perseverance,” he said.
 
He made the point that we cannot rest on our accomplishments, saying he still strives to improve as a coach and teacher.
 
“We have to work hard and keep trying to get better,” he said. “God still has more for us to do.”
