McKay Interim Head Track Coach

Mr. Orlando McKay has been named interim head coach of the track and field team. McKay has served as an assistant track coach since 1997. In that time, the Owls claimed three state championships and 14 region titles.
Athletic Director and Head Football and Track Coach Bobby Alston, who is retiring December 31, announced the appointment. McKay has held many roles since arriving at MUS in 1996, beginning as head strength and conditioning coach until 2000. He served as an assistant football coach for 25 years, helping lead the Owls to four state championships, four state runner-up finishes, and nine region titles. In the classroom he has taught psychology, finance, speech, and physical education, and he holds the Pam and George Sousoulas Chair of Economics.

Before coming to MUS, McKay was a multisport athlete at the University of Washington. He was a three-time All-American in track and helped the Huskies football team win the 1991 national championship. A fifth-round selection in the 1992 NFL Draft, he played wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers before finishing his career in the Canadian Football League.

He coached all three of his sons at MUS – Aedan ’18, Seth ’20, and Gavin ’21.

“Coach McKay's wealth of experience, knowledge, and wisdom will serve the boys well in this interim year,” Alston said. “He has been a key contributor to the track program his entire tenure at MUS."

Alston announced the following assistant coach assignments:
  • McKay and Instructional Technology Teacher Drew Hinote - sprinters and hurdlers
    Hinote, who came to MUS this fall from Woodland Presbyterian School, served as Woodland’s head track coach for 12 years, winning five city championships.
  • Lower School Dean of Students and Cross Country Head Coach Joe Tyler – distance
    Tyler has coached the cross country team to two state runner-up finishes and six region championships.
  • Director of Student Life Stephond Allmond ’10 – jumpers
    Allmond was a member of the 2009 track state championship team at MUS and won the 2010 individual state title in the triple jump, being selected as All-State in both track and football before continuing his track career at East Tennessee State University.
  • Science Instructor Nick Blackwell – throwers
    Blackwell has served as a Lower School assistant football and track coach, specializing in the shot put. Prior to arriving at MUS in 2020, Blackwell coached multiple grade levels and the varsity offensive line at Lausanne Collegiate School during a time when the Lynx won two state football championships.
  • Mr. Kris Whitfield – vaulters
    Whitfield has coached for 15 years, assisting 12 state champions and two national champions, including Harrison Williams ’14.
  • Lower School Athletic Director Matt Bakke - Lower School team, assisted by Admissions Assistant Director and Coach Glenn Rogers
    Bakke was head varsity basketball coach from 2012-19, leading the Owls to a state runner-up finish in 2014. He has also coached the Lower School cross country team and served as Lower School track coach. Rogers has served as an assistant track coach and assistant football coach for 23 years.
