Owls Earn Scholastic Art Awards

Seven Owls received Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards for their work in the Drawing and Illustration, Mixed Media, Painting, and Portfolio divisions.
Oscar Liu ’25 collected seven awards across four categories. His piece “Daily Special” won a Gold Key while “Polarizing Static” earned a Silver Key in Drawing and Illustration. Liu gained two Honorable Mentions in the Painting category for “Drowsy Distraction” and “Filter.” He earned an Honorable Mention for “Ready or Not” in the Mixed Media category.

Additionally, Liu won a Gold Key for his overall portfolio “How Technology Separates Us,” containing a variety of artworks that have been recognized during his time as an Owl. His second portfolio, “Exploring Old Memories,” earned an Honorable Mention.

Wills Frazer ’25 won five awards in three categories. “Pick a Card” won a Gold Key in the Mixed Media category. He earned Honorable Mentions in Painting for “Quadruple Jump,” “Chess Gazing,” and “Roll the Dice.” 

Frazer also received an Honorable Mention for his art portfolio, “Games and Human Condition.” 

Raahim Afzal ’29 won a Gold Key for his Mixed Media self-portrait. Patrick Du ’29 added a Silver Key in the Painting Category for his work “Monochrome Self Portrait.” 

The submission by Chase Coleman ’30 in the Drawing and Illustration category, “Ofrenda,” earned him a Silver Key. Hudson Rhodes ’29 and Beck Vincent ’30 collected Honorable Mentions in the Drawing and Illustration category for “Art Piece” and “The Colored Pencil Ofrenda,” respectively.

Winners are eligible for scholarships, cash prizes, and a place in an exhibition at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Recipients of a Gold Key will also have their work sent to New York City for national judging.
