Students Elect Wells Honor Council President

The student body elected junior Devin Wells to be the 2025-26 Honor Council president following the Upper School nomination and voting process.
The Upper School Honor Council, composed of representatives elected by each class and a president elected by the student body, is charged with the responsibility of upholding the school’s Honor Code and dealing fairly and justly with any violation.

In his speech to fellow Owls during chapel March 19, Wells described being afflicted at age 6 with polymyositis – a rare inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness, pain, and fatigue. In the hospital and afterward, he fought to regain strength and cope with the side effects of steroid medications.

“I really believe that overcoming the long-term effects of this illness shaped me into the man I am today because it took courage, commitment, and determination. I have applied these same principles to everything that I have done since this illness occurred.”

Wells, who has served on the Honor Council since seventh grade, invoked the six traits that define U.S. Medal of Honor recipients: courage, sacrifice, patriotism, citizenship, integrity, and commitment.

“Just as these traits are applied to men and women in military situations, these traits also correlate to the school’s Community Creed,” he said.  “As students of Memphis University School, we share a duty to preserve our tradition of general excellence by upholding the principles that define and unify our community.”

Pledging to support the application of these tenets, he said. “I will be honest in my actions and will exhibit moral integrity to determine my decisions. This is because I have stood shoulder to shoulder with most of my classmates for over five years. I understand that every member of the student body deserves to be treated equally. This includes me, and I fully understand that I will be held to the same rules as everyone else. In other words, in this position, I am not above the law.”

Wells concluded, “I will earn the respect of my fellow council members and the student body by devoting time, energy, and dedication to ensure that all cases are handled respectfully and without prejudice or malice.”
